Summer Lungs
Summer Lungs is the music of Patrick McMahon, supported by a rotating lineup of collaborators and centered around life in the tiny surf drenched village of his long-extended young adulthood. From the safe distance and quietude of his secret hideout behind a waterfall, McMahon writes vividly about the eight flavors of love and moments of fleeting freedom.
His music hybridizes the sounds of various eras of cosmic Americana spiked with a scrambled sensibility unique to the lost and found gringo ethos of contemporary Central America. Pan American Folktronica may be an appropriate descriptor, Micro-Plasticized Surfer Trash could be another.
Box store guitars, vintage synths, birdsong and field recordings all make up the sonic tapestry of his work which is born more of circumstance than design. His music is the sound of barely keeping it together in a place too beautiful for controlled spaces.
His stories are a synesthesia of memory, hopes, documents of loss and near-misses, as well as reluctant joy against the backdrop of regressive culture and declining ecosystems.
His end-of-the-road existence provides just enough cover to maintain a dogged loving interest in the world and sustains him enough to gift some songs back into the void.
